Mounts are a much sought after form of transportation in which players ride atop the backs of various more or less exotic beasts (or machinations). Warlocks, paladins and death knights can learn to summon mounts as a class perk. Mounted travel is always faster than walking, and The Burning Crusade expansion introduced flying mounts.
Mounts were generally expensive in the past, but their prices have been reduced while the training to ride them increased in order to compensate. However, some mounts do not cost any gold or Marks of Honor and will drop at very low rates from bosses in instances such as Stratholme, Zul'Gurub, Tempest Keep, Magisters' Terrace, Sethekk Halls, Karazhan, Utgarde Pinnacle, and Obsidian Sanctum.

editGeneralMounts have 1.5 second casting time (prior to 3.2.0, it was 3 seconds), which will be interrupted by taking any damage, moving, or entering combat.
Pressing the "jump" key (space bar by default) while not moving mount will perform a unique action. For example hawkstriders will shriek.
There are several items, enchantments and skills that will increase your mount speed. (Mithril Spurs, Riding Crop and Crusader Aura (speed increase items do not work for players above level 70).
There are total 7 kinds of mounts:
Does not increase speed - Riding Turtle
60% water speed increase - Sea Turtle
60% ground speed increase - Felsteed
100% ground speed increase - Great Brown Kodo
60% ground speed increase, 150% air speed increase - Flying Machine
100% ground speed increase, 280% air speed increase - Turbo-Charged Flying Machine Control
100% ground speed increase, 310% air speed increase - Ashes of Al'ar
editRiding skills and abilities
A Human Mage riding a Swift White Steed, an Alliance Epic Mount.
Blood Knights riding their Horde paladin mounts.Several types of mounts exist, all which correspond to one of the four different riding skills: (Apprentice, Journeyman, Expert, and Artisan). All land mounts can swim allowing normal swimming movement through bodies of water, but removing the need to remount after leaving the water.
Apprentice: Level 20 Apprentice riding skill (75) costs 4 for training and an additional 1 for the mount, both reduced by the appropriate reputation discount. Rare ground mounts increase movement speed by 60%. It was reduced from level 40 and 90 for training in Patch 2.4.3, and from level 30 and 35 for training in Patch 3.2.0. At level 20 (since Patch 3.2.0) warlocks can learn the spell Summon Felsteed at the cost of 1 , which grants them a Felsteed mount and Apprentice Riding skill. Additionally, at level 20, paladins can learn the spell Summon Warhorse from the paladin class trainer at the cost of 1 , which grants them a Warhorse mount and the Apprentice Riding skill.
Also, note under the old PvP system (pre-Patch 2.0), that it was possible at riding skill 75 and level 55 to buy and ride the PvP versions of some Epic ground mounts at Rank 11 ( Commander or Lieutenant General). These mounts are no longer available for purchase for players.[1]
Journeyman: Level 40 Journeyman riding skill (150) costs 50 for training and an additional 10 for the mount, both reduced by the appropriate reputation discount. Epic ground mounts increase movement speed by 100%.
Paladins can learn Charger, and warlocks can learn Dreadsteed from their trainers after learning the Journeyman riding skill from the riding trainer. There is no need to purchase a new mount.
Death knights receive their epic ground mount, the Acherus Deathcharger, after the completion of the quests Grand Theft Palomino and Into the Realm of Shadows.
Expert: Level 60 Expert riding skill (225) costs 250 for training and an additional 50 for the mount, both reduced by the appropriate reputation discount (Stormwind for the Alliance and Orgrimmar for the Horde). This skill is learned from Wind Rider Jahubo in Thrallmar in Hellfire Peninsula to Horde players and from Hargen Bronzewing, located in Honor Hold in the same zone, to Alliance players. It is also learned from Ilsa Blusterbrew in Wildhammer Stronghold, Shadowmoon Valley to Alliance players and from Olrokk, located in Shadowmoon Village in the same zone, to Horde players. Flying mounts are also only usable while within Outland and Northrend. However, flying in Northrend requires cold weather flying training (see below). Rare Flying mounts increase movement speed by 150% in the air and 60% on the ground. For faction discounts, trainers honor the Stormwind or Valiance Expedition factions for the Alliance and Orgrimmar or Warsong Offensive for the Horde. If you're a druid, you can buy Flight Form from any druid trainer, which also gives you Expert riding skill as an added bonus, allowing you to buy a flying mount without any training. It is beleived you can do this with Artisan riding skill and Cold Weather flying training as well.
Death knights (and future Hero classes) can receive their flying mounts fairly quickly into the game, with some funds from a main.
Artisan: Level 70 Artisan riding skill (300) costs 5,000 for training and an additional 100 for the mount. The skill is learned from the same trainers who teach the Expert skill. Epic Flying mounts increase movement speed by 100% on the ground and 280% in the air. For faction discounts, trainers honor the Stormwind (Purchased at Honor Hold) or Valiance Expedition factions for the Alliance and Orgrimmar (Purchased at Thrallmar) or Warsong Offensive for the Horde. This is also the training level required to use the ultra-rare 310% speed flying mounts. (See Riding for table of discounts)
Cold Weather Flying: Level 77 The skill Cold Weather Flying costs 1,000 . This non-discountable training grants players the ability to also use their flying mounts in Northrend and requires at least level 77. Note that you can learn Cold Weather Flying before Artisan level riding. Level 80 characters are able to buy a bind to account tome called Tome of Cold Weather Flight which allows characters of level 68 to learn the spell, making flight in Northrend possible from an earlier level. Learned from: Hira Snowdawn at Dalaran, Pilot Vic in Sholazar, or Roxi Ramrocket in the Storm Peaks.
Price Summary Level 20: Apprentice Riding (Skill 75): Can be learned at for 4 . (Mounts: 1 )
Level 40: Journeyman Riding (Skill 150): Can be learned at for 50 . (Mounts: 10 )
Level 60: Expert Riding (Skill 225): Can be learned for 250 . (Mounts: 50 )
Level 70: Artisan Riding (Skill (300): Can be learned for 5,000 . (Mounts: 100 )
Level 77: Cold Weather Flying: Can be learned for 1,000 from trainer in Dalaran.
Equals total 6465 , without any faction discounts.
Patch 3.2.0 (2009-08-04): The faction discounts now apply for riding skill vendors in Honor Hold and Thrallmar (5% to 20%).
Patch 3.2.2 (2009-09-22): (undocumented) The riding trainers in Thrallmar and Honor Hold are now part of the Orgrimmar and Stormwind factions respectively. Note also that this change doesn't apply to trainers in Northrend.
editBase mounts Racial mounts
Two trolls riding raptors. Each race has their own mount, but other races can ride these mounts if they have the appropriate faction status.
Prior to patch 3.0.8, each race could only ride certain mounts (indicated in the mount's tooltip). With the introduction of patch 3.0.8, these restrictions were removed, allowing characters of any race to purchase and ride mounts from any faction, provided they had the appropriate faction standing.
Before the introduction of the taurens' mount in patch 1.1, the kodo beast, tauren players used an ability called plainsrunning.

Class-granted mountsThere are some classes in the game that can acquire special mounts linked to their own class through lore. These classes are the paladin, the death knight and the warlock, all actually given a type of horse. Prior to the expansion, in order to gain the epic version of the paladins or the warlock's mount, one was ushered to pursue a very long quest chain sending one to every corner of Azeroth in search of rare ingredients; beside that, it also required a lot of gold. As a means to speed up leveling, as of the introduction of Wrath of the Lich King, these quests are now optional; the skill can be learned from the classes' respective trainer at level 40. Doing the quest version rewards the player with a Feat of Strength in addition to the mount. The normal version of the mount has always been free, rewarded through a very minor quest.
With Cataclysm, it seems that Tauren will not be getting a Charger[2]. This may also be true for the Draenei[3].
Class Available mounts
Death knight Deathcharger at level 55 after completing [55] Into the Realm of Shadows.
Winged Steed of the Ebon Blade, a skeletal gryphon used as flying mount.
Paladin Warhorse (blue and silver) at level 20.
Charger (blue and golden) level 40.
Thalassian Warhorse (red and bronze) at level 20.
Thalassian Charger (red and bronze) at level 40.
Argent Charger (silver) 100 & Exalted Argent Champion of the Alliance/ Exalted Argent Champion of the Horde.
Warlock Felsteed at level 20.
Dreadsteed at level 40.
Purchasing other mounts You can purchase your own race's mount regardless of your reputation provided you have enough gold stockpiled. However, to purchase another race's mount, your reputation with that race's faction must be exalted. Before Patch 1.12.1, it was required to get additional training to ride that race's mounts. After Patch 1.12.1, a universal riding skill was introduced that superseded all the mount-specific riding skills. Do keep in mind that mount vendors of cities owned by races other than your own will not show you what they have to offer unless you are exalted with them.
editIncreasing your speedThrough class abilities and talentsDruids and Shamans acquire shapeshift forms that increase their movement speed (not as much as a mount, but it is trainable at an earlier level), while Hunters get aspects to boost their own movement speed and that of their party. Rogues and druids in cat form have an ability to temporarily increase movement speed. Here are the skills and abilities that provide some classes with a bit of a faster movement speed, either passively or by the activation of an ability.
Druid
Flight Form at level 60. Usable only in Outland or Northrend. Movement speed (flying) increased by 150%. Instant cast, cannot shapeshift in combat. Learning the ability also teaches druids the riding skill 225 at the same time. Requires riding skill 150 to learn.
Swift Flight Form at level 70. Usable only in Outland or Northrend. Movement speed (flying) increased by 280%, 100% increase at ground level. Instant cast, cannot shapeshift in combat. It requires the druid to have the riding skill 300 and can be learned from the trainer once you reach level 71. It is also obtainable at the end of a long quest chain, requiring the riding skill 300 to start, which culminates with the killing of Anzu, the Raven God in Heroic Sethekk Halls.
Hunter
Pathfinding in the Beast Mastery talent tree (tier 3). Increases your speed while mounted by 5%/10%. The mounted movement speed increase does not stack with other effects.
Rogue
Fleet Footed in the Assassination talent tree (tier 5). Reduces the duration of all movement impairing effects by 15%/30% and increases your movement speed by 8%/15%. This does not stack with other movement speed increasing effects.
Paladin
Pursuit of Justice in the Retribution talent tree (tier 3). Increases your movement speed (and mounted movement speed) by 8%/15%. This does not stack with other speed increasing effects.
Crusader Aura at level 62. Movement speed while mounted is increased by 20%. The mounted movement speed increase does not stack with other effects.
Death knight
On a Pale Horse in the Unholy tree (tier 4). Increases your speed while mounted by 10/20%. The mounted movement speed increase does not stack with other effects.
Priest
Body and Soul in the Holy Tree (tier 8). Increases speed by 30/60% for 4 seconds on that target with Power Word: Shield active on them.
Through items and enchantsThere are five other methods for increasing your mounted speed, with no effects beyond level 70:
[Enchant Gloves - Riding Skill]: +2% (stacking), world drop Enchanting recipe
[Carrot on a Stick]: +3% (stacking), reward from the Gahz'rilla quest in Zul'Farrak.
[Mithril Spurs]: +4% (stacking), world drop Blacksmithing plans
[Riding Crop]: +10% (non-stacking), Leatherworking pattern sold in Old Hillsbrad Foothills.
[Skybreaker Whip]: +10% (non-stacking), quest reward from [70] Dragonmaw Race: Captain Skyshatter, must be Honored with Netherwing.
These last two items effectively increase a mount's speed by 10%. However, they do not stack with the previously mentioned methods, so they are approximately (see below) a 1% improvement over using the above 3 items combined. It should be also noted that for players of WotLK the Riding Crop is only usable for two levels (69 and 70), and the Skybreaker Whip only for one level (70).
All speed improvement items work on both normal and flying mounts (with the exception of npc controlled point-to-point flight).
Characters higher than level 70 will not benefit from mount speed improvement items and enchants. Blizzard's design goal is to eliminate the trinkets, but they've had technical issues with an implementation of an alternate system. [4]
StatisticsThe first three effects act as percent multipliers of your total mounted speed, stacking with previous multipliers. Thus, if you have spurs but nothing else, your normal mount speed will be increased to about 166.4% ((100% + 60%) * 1.04 = 166.4%). These numbers were obtained experimentally using a position-tracking addon written specifically for this purpose.

editFlying mounts in Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdoms At BlizzCon 2009 it was revealed that flying mounts will be available in some form to use in Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdoms with the release of the next expansion, titled Cataclysm. Blizzard officials had previously stated that it was unlikely that they would allow flying mounts in these continents since doing so would require them to redesign the continents with flying mounts in mind.
The present state of the Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor is unsuitable for flying mounts; there are zones which should be there lore-wise but are presently empty and unfinished, among other design glitches, mountains and high buildings whose tops cannot be seen, and places where the terrain abruptly changes from one tileset to another, creating a grossly unrealistic appearance in some areas.
With the coming expansion, rebuilding the continents is precisely what they plan to do, which explains why flying in those continents will become possible.

editNotes In Patch 3.2 the cast times for summoning all mounts was reduced to 1.5 seconds, down from 3 seconds.
Mounts have a special emote they can do: This can be invoked while motionless on the ground, either by the /mountspecial slash command, or by pressing the <space> key
Flying mounts can perform a loop! Press Pitch Up or Pitch Down (normally [Ins] and [Del]) while in flight to perform a loop. On a macintosh, the <help> key, or the fn+delete combination (on the laptop) will start it.
Additionally, while in a loop, you can use your strafe keys.
From patch 3.1.0 onwards non-flight mounts are able to swim.
Mounts that allow passengers (the two choppers, the grand ice mammoth, the traveler's mammoth) allow other characters to ride as passengers. There are currently no flying mounts that allow passengers.
